Why the Lunar Calendar Matters

Unlike the Western zodiac, the Chinese zodiac follows the lunisolar calendar. The new year falls on a different date each year — typically between January 21 and February 20. If you were born in January or early February, your zodiac sign may belong to the previous year. Our calculator handles this boundary automatically.

January and early-February birthdays are where most Chinese zodiac charts go wrong. Here is how to be sure:

1. Find the Chinese New Year date for your birth year — the calculator above shows it in the result.
2. If your birthday is before that date, your animal comes from the previous lunar year.
3. If your birthday is on or after it, your animal is that year’s sign.
4. Example: someone born January 24, 1990 falls before Chinese New Year (January 27 that year), so their animal is the Snake from the 1989 lunar year — not the 1990 Horse — a boundary the calculator resolves for you.

How We Determine Your Sign

The calculator maps each birth year to the start date of its Chinese lunar year (covering 1900–2100), then assigns your animal, element, and yin/yang from the sexagenary 60-year cycle of Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches. The animal boundary is the first day of Lunar New Year; a separate tradition using Lichun (Start of Spring, around February 4) appears mainly in BaZi astrology, and we note it where it changes the outcome. Chinese New Year dates are cross-referenced against published references including timeanddate.com and the sexagenary cycle reference tables.
